Originally discovered by Columbus in 1502, the French began to settle this island in 1635, overcoming resistance from the local Carib inhabitants. In 1660, the surviving natives were rounded up and permanently expelled. The island has subsequently remained a French possession except for three brief periods of British occupation: 1762 to1763, 1794 to 1802 and 1809 to 1814.



Due to the agricultural nature of Martinique’s economy (in addition to tourism today), the Second Empire (1852 to 1870) issued a medal for its encouragement.



Between 1790 and 1893, Martinique was governed by the Ministry of the Marine (Navy) and the Colonies.











The obverse of the bronze medal features the laurel crowned effigy of Napoleon III, facing right, and the inscription NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. It is signed BARRE below the effigy. The reverse features a wreath with the enclosed curved inscription, ENCOURAGEMENT and the straight line inscription, L’AGRICULTURE. There is a curved inscription along the upper edge outside of the wreath, MINISTERE DE LA MARINE ET DES COLONIES and below framed by two stars, MARTINIQUE.

Up 1635, Martinique and Guadeloupe are French islands located in the Caribbean.

Both are Departement and a Region of the French Republic since 1946, as the others Departements and Regions in FRANCE.

French Republic have 100 Departements and 26 Régions (22 métropolitaines + 4 outremer (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, La Réunion)).

Their decoration system are the French Orders and Medals (Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur, Ordre National du Mérite, Ordre des Palmes Académiques, Ordre du Mérite Agricole, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Ordre du Mérite Maritime and all the French medals).
