Hello everyone,

here in the UK many soldiers records from the Great war have been released to the public. Does France have a similar system regarding French soldiers records from World war One?

Welcome to this forum, which I hope you will enjoy.

French soldiers' records can be obtained, but the procedure is somewhat uneasy. Roughly speaking, officers' records can be seen at the Vincennes site of Defense Archives (Service historique de l'Armée de Terre SHAT).

ORs are decidedly tougher to find : you have to know where the man you research was born since individual military records are kept in the archives of the County (département) where he was born. Names of men where KIA can be found on the Ministry of Defense site.

Professionnal researchers are few and to be found rather in connection with Family History. The staffs of local archives are not really supposed to cater to individual research. Sorry !
