Hi Chris
A very interesting paper. I would like to add that the four "colored" U.S. Infantry Regiments n°369, 370, 371 and 372nd were formally intitled to the French Victory medal.
Along with such outstanding units as Escadrille LaFayette and the "Service Sanitaire automobile américain".
(Instructions relatives à l'application de la loi du 20 juillet 1922 instituant la médaille intéralliée dite "Médaille de la Victoire").
Generally speaking the French gave these "colored regiments" a fair deal and the opportunity to play a dignified part in the war against Germany.
Thank you for pointing out this little known fascett of the Great War.
