Hello, What is this Christian X silver medal (without inscription on the reverse side) ? I have only one book about danish medal : "The decorations and medals of Denmark" (Lars Stevnsborg - 1992), but only find medals of this type with date on the reverse. Is it an interesting or current medal ??? I have purchased it without ribbon, but find in my boxes this one : Is it the good one ??? Many thanks in advance, and best regards. CONTOUTOS

And for those that don't have the book: It is the Medal of Recompense (Christian X version - 1912-1947). This medal was also used to make various commemorative medals with inscriptions (which are much more rare). The Christian X medal comes in 5 types (minor differencies to the front and reverse die). This one is a type II. I do have different types of Christian X in my collection (but not this one). Type II and V seems to be the most common. Yes, the ribbon is fine for this medal. Now you see the advantage of us sticking to mostly one ribbon in Denmark /Michael

Hi Guy, I don't understand, the book is in english and danish, it's difficult for me !!! All medals I see in the book are with a date on the reverse. When there is no engraved date, what is it ? it can't correspond to an event ?! CONTOUTOS

Dear Contoutos following the book of Lars (2005), Englisch summery at page 379 The gold medal usually had the recipient's name engraved on the edge, but the silver medals were only occasiobally named. Some medals were worn from a royal crown or on the ribbon of the Order of Dannebrog. During Christian X's reign the medals were often awarded for 50 years faithful service in private employment to Danes. To women it was often awarded on the ribbon of the Dannebrog. Guy

Like I just explained - the Medal of Recompense has no inscription on the reverse. So that is what you have. :) /Michael

From Frederik VIII (1906-1912) and onwards, the gold medals were not named either. Examples of gold (vermeil) and silver medals with privately engraved names do occur. /Michael

The Medals of Recompense were only on very rare occasions awarded with the ribbon of the Order of the Dannebrog. The cause would normally be to give an award to a woman, for which a man would have received the Order of Dannebrog, because women were not - at that time - allowed to receive the Order of Dannebrog. For the same reason it is always the gold versions of this medal that were awarded with this special ribbon. So rest assure that your ribbon is fine for your medal /Michael

Cher Contoutos, I hope you figured out which medal you have? As Guy is saying, it is in Stevnsborg's book(s) (in the 1992 edition, this specific type is no. 183 on page 134). The English summary in this book is rather short, so if you need any of the Danish text translated to English (my French is unfortunately still not good... ), just let me know. /Michael
