Hi everybody I recently bought a MM 1916 -1930, George the V model, attibuted to a British soldier. The engraving on the rim is as follows: "L.38237 BMBR: H.WOOD. C. 184 / BDE: R.F.A" I guess BMBR could be "Bomber" and RFA is "Royal Field Artillery". But could somebody help me to understand the meaning of the "L.38237" "C184" figures and what is "BDE" ? In an other hand I have some British medals to be researched: could somebody pass me the internet adress of a good researcher in UK ? Thank you in advance for your help and have a nice evening.

Netprowler, BMBR stands for Bombardier, the equivalent rank of Corporal used in the artillery units.L.38237 is the soldier's identification number, his army number.C. 184/BDE is C Battery, 184th Brigade You may find this link useful for your research : http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/grandad.htm Cheers,Hendrik

Hi, I can tell you H Wood with that number was not a casulaty in the Great War in the Royal Field Artillery. Send me the details you want researching on other medals you have and I`ll do a basic check for you to see if they were casualties. Regards Jim

Here is a copy of his medal index card. TSometimes there is an address or entry on the rear, but this hasn`t got one. He was not entitled to the 1914 or 1915 star so was probably New Armny. Regards Jim http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/1613/henrywoodmicax8.jpg

Back on the forum after a couple days off I would like to warmly thank Hendrik and Tunneller for their precious, quick and efficient help. Very impressive indeed. Thanks to you fellow collectors a brave Brittish artillery servant is coming back from the past. I 've always been a strong admirator of the Brittish system of awards. The most serious in the world to my opinion that allows to find out the "man behind the medal". I found his Victory Medal and BWM as well. And the card provided by Tunneller shows that he didn't received any other awards. Consequently I think it's all for his medals but is there any way to know why this guy was awarded a MM ? I will do all the necessary if I've any chance to know a bit more about Mr Wood. I think the guy deserves it. Again warm and friendly thanks. D

Hi, Unlike the Distinguished Conduct medal to which all citations are listed, there are no citations published for the British Military medal. The only entry will be in the London Gazette stating when Henry Wood was awarded his MM. I will try and do some research and I may be able to identify his unit. From there you can gain access to the war diairies and Henry Wood may be mentioned. Regards Jim
