Hello , I have in stock since many years this beautiful ribbon : Old, in silk, 51 mm width. I found in books that it is for a danish cross of an "Asylum for unmarried noble ladies", or "VALLO STIFT" order. I think it's the same sort we say in France "Croix de Chapitre" (chapter's cross). Can someone confirm, and (better) find a picture of the medal ??? Many thanks in advance, CONTOUTOS

In Maximilian Gritzner's book "Handbuch der im Deutschen Reiche, in Oesterreich-Ungarn, Dänemark, Schweden und den Russischen Ostseeprovinzen bestehenden Damen-Stifter..." from 1893, he has a drawing of the badge. He also has a drawing of the ribbon, which is not exactly like yours. But his description (in text) is more like yours, so maybe the drawing artist just misinterpreted the information. If you like, I can scan the relevant drawing and put it here. I can also show you my own breast stars for Vallö Stift (embroidered and metal)... /Mike

Here are the drawings from the book (I don't think there is a copyright issue due to its age...) The badge with the diamond-border is for the head-master (or whatever she is called...) The text describing the ribbon is: "Dieses Ordenszeichen wird an einem breiten, gewässerten Ponceau-Band mit schwarz-bodirtem, silbernem Bordstreifen von der linken Schulter zur rechten Seite getragen."As you can see, the text is closer to your ribbon (" schwarz-bodirtem, silbernem Bordstreifen "). /Mike

Not much, I'm afraid... It was worn by the head-master (German: äbtissin) together with her special badge (so no. 94 and 96 on the drawing above go together). The noble unmarried ladies only wore the badge (no. 95 above). All wore their badges on a shoulder sash (94a). I don't know if the metal star was privately made or if they - at some point in time - generally went from embroidered stars to metal stars. /Mike

Hi Grand Danois , Thank you very much ... your breast stars are really fantastic !!! Here is the other ribbon I have in my stock, same origin, but I have never identified : In my documentation (Scandaluzzi ribbons encyclopedia), we can see another danish ribbon, but not exactly the same that mine : Do you know it ??? Best regards. CONTOUTOS

This badge from the Danish asylum of Wemmetofte was on auction at Thies at some point (unfortunately I didn't get it...): This is the head-master's version with diamonds in the crown and initials in the center medallion. I think the ribbon on that piece is new, so I don't know which is more correct. Gritzner writes " Das Zeichen wird an weissseidenem Bande mit breitem dunkelblauen und schmalen rothen Bordstreifen an der linken Schulter getragen.", but that description could fit both versions. /Mike

| Hmmm... it's really hard to say... the 2 ribbons are almost too close to be a coincidence.
The 5-6 pictures I have seen of ladies from Vallø Stift wearing their sash are too small to reveal any details of the ribbon.
And maybe it changed over time? After all, the Vallø Stift order existed for more than 200 years. And if Gritzner's drawings are slightly incorrect, and collectors are having new ribbons made after his drawings, then it only adds to the confusion...
So I don't really know...

Hello again Contoutos, I just returned from a trip to Frederiksborg Castle which had a special exhibition about the Order of Dannebrog (it's 200 years since it was reformed). Browsing the permanent portrait collection at the castle, I stumbled upon this portrait of a head master from Vallø Stift (there was no name anywhere...). As you can see, the painter's very accurate depiction of the ribbon is exactly like yours (and not like the picture in Gritzner's book). BTW, the order on the blue ribbon is the obsolete Danish order "de l'Union Parfaite" /Mike
